Finding your purpose helps with focus and avoiding shiny objects

In this day of Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Netflix, Slack, self-driving cars and a million other things right at our fingertips it's safe to say that distraction is an issue.

And perhaps even for impactful than day to day distractions are the distractions that pull us from our bigger goals. Should I do this project or take that job or support that cause? All seem like good ideas in some way but who is to say which is the "right one."

The unexpected part of the focus that I see after finding one's purpose isn't the "I'm going to do this one big thing and I always think about it" sort of focus. It's the focus that comes from countless gentle nudges and baby steps in a particular direction.

You know who you are and what you are about and with that information you are just more likely to take actions, have conversations and build systems that are aligned with that purpose.

The experience isn't you always know exactly what you are doing and where you are going or how to get there,...

How finding your purpose helps with standing up for your needs

Do you stand up for what you need to be successful, what you deserve or what you believe in?

Let's be honest - that isn't easy to do. It's one thing to know what you want and it's another to make that known to the people that matter.

Knowing your purpose helps with this because you are clear on who you are and who you aren't. You are able to say this is what I need or don't want and express that in a way that people can actually hear.

The good news is that If you put your purpose into everyday language and practice using it on a regular basis, then you build up your confidence so that when you are talking with a boss or a potential hire or an investor or a key client you an more easily say this is who and I and what I am about that this is why you need what every you need.

Does it always work out?

Not of course not but the more you know about your purpose, the more clear you are going to be on what you need and the more courageous you will be in going after it.

That's the...

How finding and using your purpose helps with feedback

In the modern world, feedback is crucial and frequent. You need the ability to give feedback in a way that people can hear and you need to be able to take.

None of us are perfect so even if we know our purpose 100% there will be times when we fall short.

Understanding who you are and what you are about, helps with this.

If you make a mistake, no matter how bad, you still know your purpose and that provides a foundation or a base. Yes, there may be impacts and you may have to apologize or do something of the like to resolve the issue but those things don't strip you of your ability to say "I am about [your purpose] and this is what it means to me."

For me, that gives the space to take a breath, think about what I said or did, and how I can do better next time.

On the giving side, I find purpose helps me better understand how to say the feedback in a way the person can hear and it compels me to speak up when something isn't working for myself or the people around me.

Finding your purpose helps with grit, determination and not giving up

Another unexpected benefit of finding, using, and ultimately owning your purpose is that you keep going and don't give up.

I think this happens for at least two reasons:

  1. You can't stop being yourself - Once you figure out that purpose, no matter how many mistakes you make, you are still you. That means you spend less time thinking "Oh - there is something wrong with me" and "I can't do that." Not that those things go, away but they can't stick around quite as much if you are clear on who you are.
  2. Your purpose provides the foundation and aspiration - This back and forth means that you always have a step to take. You can either work on what it takes to experience more of your purpose yourself or you can work on what it takes to share it more effectively with others.

Combine these things together you will naturally keep moving forward. That movement helps you build up your confidence courage and that helps with your grit and determination.

Even if things get tough or...

How finding your purpose helps you free yourself from mental weight

One huge benefit of finding and then using purpose in life is that it frees you up from the questions like "who am I?" and "what am I about?".

I don't think we realize, at least I didn't, how much those things weigh on us as we think about the relationships, jobs, and life we want.

Of course, finding your purpose doesn't mean that everything that needs to be done is magically done. No there is still work to do and that work isn't always easy or straight forward.

As a purpose coach, what I see is that as people settle deeper and deeper into their purpose they are able to use it faster and faster to make the decision, get unstuck and generally move things forward.

There is no worry about who they are and what they are about, it's just about being more of who they actually are.

That's the first unexpected benefit of knowing your purpose. If you want to see the other 9, go here.

If you want to clarify your purpose and start freeing yourself from that mental weight today, go here

Applying the Powder Day Process to myself

Uncategorized Dec 20, 2019

With my Powder Day Process, we look at 5 areas to help people do more of what they love. Those areas are:

  • Knowing who you are
  • Knowing the Mountain
  • Knowing your Gear
  • Commitment
  • Reflect and Rejuvenate

This is about figuring out who you are, what you love and how you can make that more available to yourself and others.

Since I am doing the same thing as most of my clients, I thought it would make sense to share how I am using this system to prepare for 2020.

Doing this has helped me clarify the things I love (powder days and helping others do more of what they love) and what systems I need to put in place to make it happen

  • Know who you are
    • Purpose
      • About people being great
    • Passion
      • Powder days and helping people do the things they love.
    • What I’m good at
      • Clear on my purpose
      • Have a process for helping people with their purpose
      • Have a way to make things simple and achievable.
    • Where I need to grow
      • Follow Through
      • Sales
      • Consistency
      • Creating clear offers
      • Making events...

15 Minute Purpose Sessions - Blake

I met Blake at a conference where we had a nice talk about how his service my tribue video service. When he followed up, I told him about my 15-minute purpose sessionS and he graciously agreed to participate.

I loved our conversation in that he started talking about how part of freedom for him was creating meaningful things in the real world. After this video ended, we talked for another 15 minutes about how he has an entire garage full of high-end tools for creating various objects out of wood and metal.

The beauty of identifying our purpose is that it helps us focus on what is important, even if we don't have the time and/or the energy to be doing it right now. But that spark of joy and excitement is there no matter how far it is buried under the gunk of everyday life.

If you want to participate in a community of purpose minded people, please join us in the Know Your Purpose Facebook group.

Branding, Clarity and Purpose with Katrina Krogstad

purpose spotlight May 12, 2019

An email from Katrina inspired me to do this interview and I'm hoping this will become a regular thing for me as I love hearing about how people are using their purpose. She is a great example of how learning your purpose and learning how to put it to use is a really powerful thing.

in this interview, Katrina talks about how her purpose of play is a bit challenging to share and she is honest about working through the language to find something that really works for her. But that inquiry energized her and gave her a framework for describing a seemingly wide range of businesses.

The real bonus is that she is in action, making changes to her website, re-creating logos, and getting the word out about her services.

She is really inspiring and a wonderful example of what it looks like to put one's purpose to use.

Her website is:
