What I gained by only losing 2 pounds after 47 days of exercising

What i learned this week - sometimes we are looking at the wrong numbers

Today was Day 47 of the #Grabyourjunkworkout.

For 47 days I have gone to my garage, grabbed something and did a workout with it.

And today felt like quitting. This week I stepped on a scale for the first time in a few months and I realized that after 47 days in a row I had only lost 2 pounds.

Only 2 freaking pounds after all that time. i started to think F this - i should just give up. And i almost did.

But fortunately, I knew others would be there so I went ahead and went. And I'm so glad I did.

Because as I did lunges and arms presses with the random jugs of radiator fluid and windshield wiper fluid, I realized all the other benefits that I have received from doing these workouts everyday:

* I laugh more
* I've learned to fail and be silly more
* I have something interesting to talk about
* I've made new friends
* I feel stronger
* I have the knowledge that I can do something 47 days...

Your Purpose + 2 Questions = Awesomeness

Like it or not, the “normal” ways of doing things are gone and we have to figure out the new, new. This becomes doubly or triply hard given all the uncertainty and the very real concerns that are present regarding our health and the health of our loved ones.
But here is something that I that I’ve found incredibly helpful. Each day, I ask myself:
  • How can I help myself experience more of my purpose?
  • How can I help others experience more of my purpose?
These two questions have kept me focused and moving forward while we have been sheltering in place over the past 3+ weeks.  In that time, I have:
  • Launched a podcast.
  • Redesigned my website.
  • I started a fitness revolution (well that may be a stretch but I have worked out every day).
  • Hosted a daily check-in call.
  • And I’m announcing a 10-day purpose program tomorrow 4/10) that is so simple and effective that it’s going to turn the purpose world upside down.

5 reasons why sharing your purpose is a good idea

For the past three years, I’ve been talking about the power and benefits of sharing your purpose. I like to say "you should know your purpose so well that you can share it over drinks with friends."

And honestly people still look at me funny when I say that. Purpose feels like such a big mysterious thing that it seems impossible to put it into words and even more impossible to share.

Which totally makes sense. Our purpose is core to who we are, so the act of sharing it requires a level of vulnerability that will most likely trigger our egos to get into defense mode. He or she will fill our heads with good reasons not to be vulnerable (it’s too much, they won’t understand you, nobody talks like that, you’ll sound funny, etc) and we will most likely refrain from sharing (or maybe even looking to see) who we really are.

That’s why sharing your purpose is so powerful - it’s a way to practice building up your purpose muscles and strengthen your ability...

How finding your purpose helps you get more stuff done with less stress


Day 10 of the unexpected benefits of knowing your purpose - getting stuff done.

This has to be the very best - getting stuff done.

Purpose often has this sense of being airy, fairy and this thing that you get to after you get done with the "important stuff."

Nothing can be farther from the truth. When you know who you are and what you are about, you just get more stuff done. And this isn't by accident as your purpose forces you to focus on 5 key areas:

  • Knowing who you are

  • How to share it

  • Taking actions aligned with your purpose

  • Building systems to support your efforts and

  • Learning to grow through reflection and refinement

That is owning your purpose and when those things happen you just get sh!t done. And not just by working hard but by being more of yourself.

Because when you are more of yourself, and your conversations and actions are more aligned with that (even if you aren't perfect) and your systems support you, then things just move faster.

I know this may sound funny but increasing your ability to feel is so beneficial in business. After all, much of marketing and branding and customer service is about how you want your clients to feel about your business.

And something that is quite helpful in determining how other people feel?

Knowing how YOU actually feel and having the ability to share what is going on with you.

Knowing your purpose is in large part about how you want yourself and others to feel so the more you deepen your understanding of your purpose the more you are attuned to your feelings.

This allows you to powerfully speak about what is and is not working for you and others.

As a leader, if you are interested in having others be authentic and real then you have to be willing to be authentic and real. That starts with having the courage to share who you are and what is happening in your world.

How finding your purpose helps you reduce stress and overwhelm.


Day 8 of the unexpected benefits of knowing your purpose - you reduce your stress and overwhelm.

Let's honest - stress and overwhelm suck. It's so easy to get caught up in all that needs to be done and get pulled in so many directions that you lose sight of yourself and the possibility of living a life you really love.

Knowing your purpose helps with that.

When you know who you are and what you are about and you have the confidence that you can and will take actions consistent with that purpose, then you don't stress as much about what to do or if you will do it.

You just know that there is some step that you can take to keep moving forward. So you take a breath and you do it.

Purpose, since it is always about yourself and others, fosters connections that are real and authentic so you can actually relax and be yourself in more places. That means you know you have the community and the support to do what it is that you want to do even if it seems incredibly overwhelming.

Get grounded and certain in yourself by knowing your purpose


Day 7 of the unexpected benefits of knowing and using your purpose - being grounded,

In this day and age of being pulled in a million different directions, being grounded in who you are and what you are about not only feels good but it also is beneficial.

This is especially true when things do not go as planned as they are bound to do. 

Rather than doubting your self and having all those "I suck" voices run through your head, you can lean on your purpose with confidence. That gives you the space and freedom to keep taking the next steps.

The other benefit of being grounded in our purpose is that you generate momentum. If are taking actions and having conversations that are aligned with your purpose those things build up over time. Then one day you look around at your life and you realize how much of your life is a reflection of your purpose.

Finding your purpose helps you get real with yourself and others.


Let's get real - the ability to be real, to be yourself regardless of circumstances is not the easiest thing to do. Everyone from Brene Brown to Oprah talks about the power of being authentic and knowing your truth.

But there is one big problem - most of us have no idea who we actually are. We have far more experience being who we think we need to be rather than being who we actually are. This is especially true at work where we have the added stress of having to produce results.

Of course, we know that feeling of when we are actually being ourselves. There is a sense of freedom, joy, and laughter because you are grounded in who you are and you don't feel the need to be anything.

Knowing your purpose and knowing who you are helping with this. Yes, there will be places where you struggle being yourself, we all have those. But the more you can explore purpose and to expand your ability to experience it yourself and share it with others, then your ability to be real will grow.
